 Start Of An Idea May 19th, 2008 So I was thinking I’d show you how ‘One Will Hear The Other’ started out.was around at my friend Dave’s house and he’d just scored these new software synths that you can play on you computer. One was an emulation of the classic Prophet 5 keyboard (while working on Churn, Jaz Coleman had told us that it was the synth that P.I.L. used to use so we were intrigued - but they were pretty hard to come by in NZ) so I took the opportunity and started playing with it.after a while I hit upon this, very loose, riff - Triumph.mp3 which I recorded through the speakers Dave had his computer plugged into onto my mobile phone (that’s why it sounds so shoddy, but when you’re writing, who gives a fuck?)I sorta liked the way the notes were colliding with each other so I stuck it onto my laptop and named it ‘triumph’didn’t think about it for a few months but, while we were writing Beautiful Machine, we got into having days that were just listening sessions where we’d play each other what we’d been jamming on by ourselves so I remembered really liking this one and played it to the guys and, luckily, they all saw something in it also.as it was written on a keyboard I had no idea what the notes were but I remember Karl and me quickly working it out on bass and guitar and then Tom laying down what became the groove to ‘One Will…’ (listening back to the original little keyboard line now it’s surprising that he decided to lay down such an up tempo but thank fuck he did because it was just right)as soon as we began playing it together Phil decided to play 1 note over and over through the whole thing (just like the way it starts on the album) and it was then I began to get the good old spine tingling feeling and looked up to see everyone smiling and getting lost in to.these are the kind of moments that make being in this band magical and make everything that’s bothering you fade into the distance.obviously, there was all whole bunch of other work we went through with this track to get it where it ended up (writing lyrics, singing them, arranging the song etc.) but I just wanted to talk about the start of an idea.
